SELECTED ACTIVITIES

Outreach to women load carriers in bodija market, Ibadan, Oyo State

The Job

Skills in Trading

Mismanagement

The group of women constitute the poorest of the poor in the community, society and the nation. Their job is to assist any willing customer to carry all the purchased goods from place to place within the market until the customer is done with their purchase for the day. The purchased items are kept in the basin and carried by the woman throughout the period which may last from one to three hours. The weight of the basin increases with each purchased item which may include heavy food items such as yam tubers and rice to mention a few.

When the customer is done with all the purchases, all the goods are carried to wherever the customer desires by the load carrier after which a stipend is paid which range from 50 naira to 500 naira. In-depth interview with the women revealed that all the women had acquired initial skills in trading.

There were various reasons for the loss of their initial trading capital. These range from fund mismanagement, inability to save, care of a sick relation, death of a husband and polygamy. They have resulted to this type of hazardous work as a response to the daily economical demands from both immediate and extended families. The women indulge in self mediation on a daily basis to take care of their pains. Obviously they do not fit into any category for the available social support by the government. The daily take home is not consistent as it depends on their ability to get customers who need their services. Consequently, it becomes difficult to raise the capital required for a better trade.

interview

In-depth interview with another woman who has been in the market for 3years.

Her daily income on a good day is between 2000 -2,500 naira while on some other days, she may make as low as 500 Naira. She caters for 4 children from her daily business with no support from her husband who has other 3 wives. She has moved out to a separate accommodation. Originally she trained in buying and selling yams. The capital for her yam selling business was spent on taking care of her sick father who finally died. The needs of the 4 children did not allow her to raise another capital to start her trade since all of them are in school. From her daily income, she buys food for the children, keeps money for transportation to and from home back to the market. This is a similar story for most of the women except for those who are widows.
